Horizon Forbidden West is out on PS5 and PS4 and is one of the most acclaimed games of its generation already, but how big is the map in the game?

The follow up to the wildly successful Horizon Zero Dawn has been a critical darling since its release last week.

Per Metacritic, Forbidden West has received a Metascore of 88 from 106 critic reviews, making it the single best reviewed PS5 game of the year thus far.

Of those reviews, it has received 100 positive verdicts and just six mixed reviews; it hasn’t had a single negative review from a gaming outlet.

That is genuinely remarkable, and it seems that players are enjoying the game too; it has a score of 7.9 from 3,104 reviews on the website.

The story follows Aloy’s quest to unite the Forbidden West, and the clans within it, and to do so she’ll have to traverse the beautiful, deadly map that Guerrilla Games have built.

How big is the Horizon Forbidden West map?

The map has received a healthy upgrade from Zero Dawn, which released on the PS4.

The game’s director, Mathijs de Jonge, insists that the main quest for the developers wasn’t to increase the size of the map but rather to increase the density and the amount of content available to players, as per The Independent.

There are four distinct areas in the map, which is based on a vision of the post-apocalyptic United States of America.

The map itself is said to be five miles long, meaning it is bigger than Zero Dawn, and will take some time to explore if you aim to do absolutely everything.

Per Power Pyx, it is said to take 12 minutes to fly from the east end of the map to the west end, using a flying mount.

It’s a healthy size for a map and it is going to take some time for you to explore every nook and cranny with Aloy, throughout the game.

The Independent also drew a comparison with Skyrim, one of the biggest open world games ever released, but the map is nowhere near the size of that; Skyrim’s map was 15 miles, approximately, which is around three times the size of Forbidden West’s map.

Still, it seems as though Forbidden West has content coming out of its ears, so you’ll never be short of something to do, even if you fancy taking a break from the main storyline in the game.
